Centre for Management Studies of IST (CEG-IST)

CEG-IST, the Center for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) is a research center hosted by IST-ID. Harbored within the IST engineering environment, CEG-IST aims to explore and reinforce the links between management science and engineering approaches to stimulate creativity in problem-solving, challenged by sustainability paradigms. This systemic view is the distinctive character of CEG-IST. CEG-IST’s overall objective is to promote research opportunities associated with the development of knowledge, processes, tools and methods required to make decisions and to shape public policies, to configure organizational structures and normative systems, to design engineering systems in sustainable patterns, and to solve problems associated with the information-intensive technology based economy, as well as with resilient, environmentally sound and sustainable futures. CEG-IST core research activity focus on appropriate problem formulations and solutions, on the design and modelling of systems and strategies, support to decision processes, public policy and planning, enabling technology transfer and the transition to more sustainable patterns of development. CEG-IST’s organizational structure is built with the purpose of promoting multi- and inter-disciplinary research, acknowledging the existence of three research fields of Systems Engineering and Management (SEM), Engineering and Management of Organizations (EMO) and Strategic Environmental and Sustainability assessment and management (SENSU). CEG-IST strategy is to encourage the cross-fertilization of the three fields to promote transversal research themes that can engage researchers with distinct backgrounds and interests, and encourage integrated research developments and findings. The unified structure of CEG-IST, as a single research group, enhances a network of research interests with multiple interactions and, consequently, motivating creativity and innovation.

Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID)

The Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID) is a R&D institute dedicated to advanced research and development in the fields of Information Technologies, Electronics, Communications, and Energy.

INESC-ID is a non-profit institution, privately owned by IST and INESC, officially declared of public interest. It was created in 2000, as a result of a reorganization of its parent institution. Since December 2004, the institution has the status of “Laboratório Associado” from FCT.

Currently, we integrate more than one hundred PhD researchers and two hundred post-graduation students divided between nineteen research groups, organized in five main research lines:

Computing Systems and Communication Networks
Embedded Electronic Systems
Information and Decision Support Systems
Interactive Intelligent Systems
Energy Systems

INESC-ID has participated in more than 50 research projects funded by the European Union and more than 190 funded by nationals entities. Until today, our researchers have published more than 700 papers in international journal papers, more than 3000 papers in international conferences, and have registered 15 patents and/or brands.

Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS)

CERIS is a research unit of IST-ID, The Association of Instituto Superior Técnico for Research and Development. IST-ID is a private not-for-profit institution, which primarily aims to undertake scientific and technological activities, fostering knowledge transfer and promoting the involvement of national and foreign researchers in RD&I and projects in their areas of expertise.

The mission and the objectives of CERIS address research, innovation and knowledge transfer needs in the following areas of the Built and Natural Environmentsector: Product Development in Civil Engineering Industries; Risk and Safety in the Built and Natural Environment; Rehabilitation of Built and Natural Environments; Response to Natural and Societal Changes.

CERIS promotes inter-territorial development by integrating PhD researchers affiliated to the following institutions: U. Algarve, U. Beira Interior, U. Évora, U. Nova de Lisboa, U. Madeira, Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Coimbra, Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria. In addition, CERIS hosts researchers from U. Estadual Campinas (Brazil), University College London, University of Western Australia, besides several private companies and foundations.

CERIS was created in 2015 through the merge of CEHIDRO (Centre of Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment), CESUR (Centre for Urban and Regional Systems) and ICIST (Institute of Structural Engineering, Territory and Construction), 3 units from the 1970s. Their merging in CERIS enhances our comprehensive thematic coverage, in depth and scope, and promotes synergies in the inherently multidisciplinary Built and Natural Environment sector, in a more integrated manner.
